Multiple Sclerosis Diagnosis

symptoms of multiple sclerosis are subtle in nature. In addition, the range of symptoms is broad. Hence, multiple sclerosis diagnosis may be delayed for months or years post occurrence of symptoms.
  • MRI scans comprising of intravenous gadolinium helps in the identification and description of brain lesions or plaques. In some cases, the lesions are dated.
  • Electro-physiological tests helps to evoke potentials. It helps in the examination of impulses that travel through nerves. This is done in order to determine the pace of the impulses (whether they are moving slowly or in a normal manner).
A combination of these tests help a neurologist confirms multiple sclerosis diagnosis. For a definite multiple sclerosis diagnosis, there must be a demonstration of dissemination in time and anatomical space.
Several other tests may help in multiple sclerosis diagnosis. Lumbar puncture is one such method. It is also known as a spinal tap. In this procedure, a small quantity of cerebrospinal fluid is drawn from the spinal column through a needle inserted in the vertebrae. The fluid is then evaluated. It is closely examined for the occurrence of oligoclonal bands, which manifest with an increase in specific antibodies.

Nearly 90% of individuals suffering from multiple sclerosis test positive in this examination. However, it should be noted that the test results are not specific to multiple sclerosis. This affects multiple sclerosis prognosis. The need to undergo a lumbar puncture depends on the MRI and neurological exam results. It also depends on the history of symptoms. However, the results of a lumbar puncture may prove useful in ruling out several other medical conditions. These tests help to achieve multiple sclerosis prognosis

    Blood Tests

Presently, there exist no blood tests to diagnose multiple sclerosis. However, there is a lot of research in this field. Despite this fact, many blood tests are conducted to rule out possibility of other medical conditions, such as HIV, Lyme disease, and genetic disorders. Tests are performed to detect presence of collagen-vascular diseases, such as lupus, scleroderma, and rheumatoid arthritis. http://www.biblehealth.com/multiple-sclerosis/multiple-sclerosis-diagnosis.html
