Ice packs followed by warm compressions may be helpful in reducing the pain. Ice helps in constricting the nerves around the painful area slowing down the process of inflammation. Thus swelling is reduced which in turn helps to relieve back pain. In severe cases the benefits of physiotherapy can support the back pain treatment. A physiotherapist is clinically trained to exercise the injured area in a manner that blood circulation in the area is restored .This is done with techniques for muscle release followed by cold and warm compressions. Ultrasound and electrical simulators are used to revive the muscles in the area. Mild exercises done with the help of a physiotherapist can help prevent further injury and help in back pain treatment.
Prescribed medicines which may be available over the counter or recommended by doctors may be administered to patients in order to relieve back pain Anti-inflammatory drugs containing cyclobenzaprine and narcotic painkillers such as hydrocodone help relieve back pain. These may contain sleep inducing agents due to their narcotic elements and may also cause dependency. In such cases steroids such as corticosteroid injections become essential for immediate relief from back pain followed by numbness, shooting pain and burning in the area. Blurred vision and constipation are some of the side effects of these steroids. Prolonged usage of steroids can cause weakening of the immune system and thus their usage must be discontinued in a gradual manner and other alternative treatments must be taken to relieve back pain.
